Study on the Spermicidal and Antibacterial Effect of Ethanol Extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots in vitro

Abstract:ObjectiveTo study the spermicidal and antibacterial effect of ethanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots. MethodsEthanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots was applied in vitro in spermicidal tests with 10 mouse sperm samples and 10 human sperm samples. The antibacterial effects of ethanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots on staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and pneumobacillus were observed. ResultsThe lowest spermicidal concentration of ethanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots on mouse and human sperm were 50mg/ml and 100mg/ml, respectively.The lowest inhibiting concentration(MIC,tube testing method) of ethanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots on staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and pneumobacillus were 1.0,1.0,4.0,4.0 mg/ml,respectively.ConclusionThe ethanol extract of Rhynchosia volubilis Lour roots has spermicidal and antibacterial effect.
